2025 was with little doubt a disastrous year for Dongqiao Li as his world collapsed around him and his many years of targeting gay and bisexual men in order to defraud them were exposed.
He was arrested at a five-star hotel in Sydney in January 2025 and he fled from justice in NSW before he was sentenced for fraud-related offences at the end of March 2025. The Magistrate found him guilty of all offences in his absence and issued an arrest warrant.
However, things only got worse for Li. Several days later he was arrested at another five-star hotel in Melbourne and charged with fraud-related offences there. In September he was sentenced to three months in prison by a Magistrate in Melbourne. This was despite correspondence from mental health experts and claims of PTSD. The Magistrate said that she would have given him 12 months if it was not for the above. This was Li’s first custodial sentence and great news for his victims.
It also became clear in court in Melbourne that even his own defense lawyer seemed unaware of his lengthy criminal history. The Magistrate criticised Li and accused him of dishonesty for not revealing his criminal past to his lawyer.
Li also attempted to get the court to suppress his name and details of his offences being reported. Journalists successfully challenged the suppression order, and it was overturned. It was also revealed in court that Li had previous convictions for shop lifting and for possession of child pornography.
Above all, this blog and countless news articles have exposed Li and his many years of committing crimes. Now, it will make it much harder for him to reoffend as one of his most valuable tools and weapons had been anonymity. He no longer has that, and it will be much easier for future and indeed past victims to identify him.
I will of course do what I can to assist, guide and support anyone who believes they may have been a victim of his.
It is important to remember that Li’s crimes were not victimless and that Li is not a victim in relation to his crimes. He is a predator who has a history of preying on men who may be vulnerable because of their sexuality and circumstances. Li had been given countless opportunities to reform but kept reoffending for over a decade.
2025 was very much the year in which Dongqiao Li’s world fell apart but he only had himself to blame.
Readers should also note that Li is still wanted on arrest warrants in NSW and South Australia. Please contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 if you know of his whereabouts in either state. Please also do not hesitate to contact police if you believe you may have been a victim of his, no matter how long ago or how much money you believe was taken or spent.
Most importantly, please do not harass Li or his family or friends in any way. Please contact police if you have any concerns about him.
